In a significant move to bolster digital financial inclusion in India, PhonePe has officially launched its UPI 123Pay service tailored specifically for feature phone users. This innovative service allows individuals to perform UPI transactions without the necessity of an active internet connection. By leveraging SMS-based technology, PhonePe is ensuring that the benefits of digital payments reach the hands of those who don't own smartphones or reside in areas with inconsistent data connectivity. The launch marks a pivotal step in expanding the reach of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) beyond the smartphone-using urban population.
Empowering Over 200 Million Feature Phone Users
The introduction of UPI 123Pay is set to impact a massive segment of the Indian population. According to industry data, there are more than 200 million feature phone users in the country who have largely been excluded from the UPI ecosystem due to the requirement of smartphones and high-speed internet. PhonePe's new service aims to bridge this digital divide, bringing millions of users into the fold of the formal digital economy. This step is expected to accelerate the growth of digital payments across various demographics and geographies in India, particularly in rural and semi-urban regions where feature phones remain the primary mode of communication.
Comprehensive Features for Daily Transactions
The PhonePe UPI 123Pay service isn't just limited to basic money transfers. Users can perform a variety of essential financial tasks directly from their feature phones. These include person-to-person (P2P) money transfers, making payments to merchants, checking bank account balances, and viewing transaction history. The company has also shared its future roadmap for the service, which includes adding features like utility bill payments, mobile recharges, and Aadhaar-based UPI registration. This expansion will eventually make feature phones as capable as smartphones for basic digital financial needs.
Device Compatibility and Strategic Partnerships
Initially, this service is being rolled out on select feature phone models. PhonePe has collaborated with major manufacturers to ensure the service is pre-installed or supported. HMD has confirmed that the service will be available on models such as HMD 105 2G, HMD 110 2G, Nokia 105 Classic, Nokia 105 Single SIM, Nokia 105 Dual SIM, Nokia 106, and Nokia 123 Shield. Plus, PhonePe mentioned that the service is being introduced on select handsets from HMD, Nokia, Lava International, and Itel Mobile. More models from HMD and Nokia are expected to receive support for this service in the coming months, further widening the user base.
AI-Powered Voice Helpline in 12 Languages
To assist users who might be new to digital payments, PhonePe has launched an AI-based voice helpline. This support system is designed to guide users through the setup and transaction process step-by-step, while recognizing the linguistic diversity of India, the voice helpline is available in 12 Indian languages in addition to English. This ensures that users can receive assistance in their preferred local language, making the transition to digital payments smoother and more user-friendly. The helpline can also answer common queries related to UPI 123Pay, providing a comprehensive support ecosystem for non-tech-savvy users.
Step-by-Step Guide to Setting Up UPI 123Pay
Setting up the service is a straightforward process designed for ease of use. First, the user needs to open the pre-installed PhonePe app on their supported feature phone. After opening the app, they must accept the terms and conditions, while the next step involves selecting their respective bank from the list provided. To link the bank account, the user needs to enter the last 6 digits of their debit card along with the card's expiry date. Once the details are verified, the user can create their unique UPI PIN, while after this registration is complete, they can start sending money using a mobile number, contact name, or UPI ID. For feature phones equipped with a camera, the service also supports scanning QR codes for merchant payments. During a transaction, the user must verify the recipient's details, enter the amount, and input their UPI PIN to complete the payment securely.
Reliability in Low Connectivity Zones
One of the most critical advantages of UPI 123Pay is its reliability in areas with poor network infrastructure. Since the transactions are processed via SMS, the service doesn't require a stable 3G, 4G, or 5G connection. This makes it an ideal solution for users in remote areas or regions with limited 2G connectivity. By removing the dependency on the internet, PhonePe is ensuring that digital payments are accessible anytime and anywhere, truly democratizing the financial landscape of India.
