The Prime Minister described France as a primary gateway to Europe and expressed his delight in welcoming President Macron to India. Highlighting the historical context, PM Modi noted that France remains one of India's oldest and most reliable strategic partners. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to elevating this partnership to unprecedented levels across sectors such as defense, space, artificial intelligence (AI), and trade.

Strategic Importance of India-Europe Trade

During the address, Prime Minister Modi identified the year 2026 as a pivotal turning point for India-Europe relations. He referenced the recent signing of a highly ambitious Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the European Union, describing it as the largest in India's history. According to official statements, France plays a crucial role in facilitating this economic integration. The Prime Minister stated that the bilateral relationship is transitioning into a 'Partnership of the People,' focusing on creating strong networks between startups and MSMEs while simplifying systems for students and researchers from both nations.

Defense Cooperation and Technology Transfer

President Emmanuel Macron outlined a comprehensive roadmap for defense cooperation, emphasizing a partnership based on equality. He announced that both nations would collaborate on the development of 5th generation fighter jet engines. Also, agreements regarding Rafale aircraft, submarines, and helicopters are set to be finalized. President Macron stressed that technology transfer would be a cornerstone of these agreements, ensuring that India enhances its domestic manufacturing capabilities. He noted that the trust between the two nations allows for high-level cooperation in sensitive areas like space and maritime security.

Advancements in AI and Digital Science

' PM Modi remarked that innovation thrives on collaboration rather than isolation. To support this, the Indo-French Center for AI and the Indo Center for Digital Science and Technology are being launched, while cooperation is also being strengthened in critical minerals, biotechnology, and advanced materials. President Macron highlighted that significant agreements have been reached in the AI and solar energy sectors, which are vital for sustainable global development and technological sovereignty.

Commitment to Global Peace and Security

Addressing global challenges, Prime Minister Modi stated that India and France support all efforts toward peace in regions including Ukraine, West Asia, and the Indo-Pacific. He reiterated a shared commitment to eradicating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. The leaders emphasized that stability and prosperity must be pursued through multilateralism, dialogue, and diplomacy. PM Modi also mentioned that India would collaborate with France on the National Maritime Heritage Complex and announced the upcoming opening of the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center in France to further cultural diplomacy.

The bilateral talks also focused on strengthening people-to-people ties through cultural and educational exchanges. Efforts are being made to make the visa and residency systems more accessible for Indian students in France.
