India / PM Modi proposes library for traditional Buddhist literature in India

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday proposed the creation of a library of all Buddhist literature and scriptures and offered resources to set it up in India.

Speaking at 6th Indo-Japan Samwad Conference, Modi said, "The great treasure of Buddhist literature and philosophy can be found in many different monasteries in many countries and languages. This body of writing is a treasure of humankind as a whole."

"I would like to propose the creation of a library of all such Buddhist literature and scriptures. We will be happy to create such a facility in India and will provide appropriate resources for it," he said.

The Prime Minister thanked the Japan government for the Samwad and said that the forum has done great work to ensure promote the ideas and ideals of Lord Buddha, especially among the youth.

Historically, lights of Buddha's message spread out from India to many parts of the world, he said.

"Samwad should be one that spreads the spirit of positivity, unity and compassion across our planet. That too, at a time when we need it the most. This Samvad is happening at a critical moment of human history. Our actions today will shape the discourse in the coming times," Modi said.

"This decade will be about nurturing bright young minds, who will add value to humanity in the times to come. Learning should be such that furthers innovation. After all, innovation is the cornerstone of the human empowerment," he added.

This Samvad Conference revolves around the need to build the future of Asia on the positive influence of traditions of non-violence and democracy in Asia. The first conference, Samvad-I, was held in New Delhi in 2015 and at Bodh Gaya.
