According to Bloomberg, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has presented a draft law for public feedback on Thursday. This will pave the way for the entry and operation of foreign educational institutions in the country for the first time.

Who will recruit faculty and staff?

According to the UGC draft, the local campuses of foreign educational institutions will decide the admission criteria, fee structure and scholarships for domestic and foreign students. These institutes will have autonomy to recruit faculty and staff.

foreign degree at affordable cost

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government is pushing for a overhaul of the country's highly regulated education sector to make foreign degrees affordable to Indian students and make India an attractive global study destination. With this step, foreign institutions will get a chance to educate the young population of the country.

Poor performance in global ranking

India's universities and colleges, from Microsoft to Alphabet Inc. Has given chief executive officers in companies till date, but performs poorly in global rankings. India ranked 101 out of 133 countries on the 2022 Global Talent Competitiveness Index, which measures a country's ability to develop, attract and retain talent.

Will be presented in Parliament for approval

Some foreign universities have already established partnerships with Indian institutions, allowing students to partially study in India and complete their degrees at the main campus abroad. The current move will encourage these foreign institutions to set up campuses without local partners. The final draft of the University Grants Commission will be presented in Parliament for approval before it becomes law.
