On Saturday, the film has earned a total of Rs 355 crore worldwide by earning Rs 14-15 crore at the box-office. In this way, Ponniyin Selvan has broken the record of worldwide lifetime collection of 'The Kashmir Files' which was the highest grosser film of the year. The lifetime collection of The Kashmir Files was Rs 340 crore.

Ponniyin Selvan-I, based on the historical novella by Kalki Krishnamurthy in 1955, is the story of the early days of Arulmozhivarman (played by Jayama Ravi), a powerful king of South India, who became the legendary Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola I.
