Railway engineer Rajesh Pandey, who brought the bride into the house after getting married with pomp about nine years ago, is now preparing to take seven rounds with the groom as Sonia. She underwent prolonged surgery about four years ago to become Sonia. After changing the gender, to get a new identity, there was a long struggle in the railways too. Excited about a new life in the new year, Sonia said that now she has got rid of the name Rajesh and every identity associated with it.

Sonia (formerly Rajesh Pandey) is posted as Technical Grade One in Izzanagar Chief Factory Manager's office. After the death of his father, Rajesh was admitted to the Railways on 19 March 2003 under compassion. The family consists of four sisters and a mother. In the year 2017, Rajesh became a woman by changing gender and changed her name to Sonia. This is also the first case in the history of railways for a male employee to become a woman.

Railway was requested to change gender

A unique case of Rajesh Pandey (currently Sonia) posted on the post of Technical Grade-I in the Chief Factory Manager's Office of Izzatnagar had come to the fore. After getting the gender changed, she had appealed to the officers to register her as a woman in the railway records. Being a unique and rare case, Izzatnagar Division sought directions from the office of General Manager, North Eastern Railway. The General Manager referred the matter to the Railway Board. Eventually, on the instructions of the Railway Board, Rajesh's gender was recorded as female and on the medical card.

Identified as female under gender dysphoria

On the basis of the report of the Medical Board, the Chief Factory Administration has given the identity of the woman under gender dysphoria i.e. desire from one gender to another. In gender dysphoria, it is often seen that some people have a male mind in a female body or a female mind in a male body. This is the result of hormone changes.

Sonia told that after the death of her father, she got a job in Bareilly's workshop in 2003 under the quota of deceased dependents. He always felt like a woman. Thought she was a woman. He liked to dress up like a woman.

Rajesh's relationship lasted for two years

The family members had married Rajesh in 2012 with great fanfare. The husband and wife must have lived together for six months, but never came close to each other. Sonia tells that this relationship lasted only for two years and then the wife got divorced.

Got surgery done in December 2017

Sonia says that after getting divorced, she had changed gender by undergoing surgery in a private hospital in Delhi. Since then, the struggle to get recognition as a woman had started.
