RRR Breaks Muthu Box Office Record: SS Rajamouli's RRR has now set the highest grossing record in the country leaving behind Rajinikanth's 'Muthu'. RRR has become the highest grossing Indian film in Japan. RRR was released in Japan on 21 October. Please tell here that Muthu had maintained this record of highest grossing for the last two decades, which has now been broken by RRR.

Muthu broke the record

The film, which released across 209 screens and 31 IMAX screens in 44 cities and prefectures of Japan, has crossed JPY 400 million (approximately ₹24 crore) to claim the top spot. Rajinikanth's Muthu, released 24 years ago, was the highest-grossing Indian film of all time in Japan, with a box office collection of 400 million Japanese yen for more than two decades. According to a report in Tollywood.net, RRR has crossed JPY 400 million to take the top spot held by Muthu for so many years.

RRR was released in October

A few weeks back, SS Rajamouli and the film's stars Ram Charan and Jr NTR were in Japan to promote their film. RRR is a fictional story set in the pre-independent era of the 1920s and is based on the lives of two real heroes and famous revolutionaries - Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem. Ram Charan played the role of Ram, NTR was seen as Bhima.

RRR earned so much worldwide

RRR, which grossed over ₹1100 crores worldwide during its theatrical run and garnered massive appreciation for its action set pieces. Recently re-released in several US cities as part of Beyond Fest. In October, the film was screened at TCL Chinese Theater and received an overwhelming response from the audience. A report by Deadline confirmed that the theatre's 932 seats were sold out in 20 minutes. From the single showing, the film grossed $21,000, bringing its box-office gross from the re-release to $221,156.

Trying for the Oscars

Meanwhile, the makers of RRR are gearing up for the Academy Awards. Amidst all this, the film is expected to score big at the Golden Globes nominations, which will be announced later on Monday. While RRR is not India's official entry to the Oscars this year, it has been presented independently to the jury. Given its popularity in the US, the prestigious awards are expected to make a splash. Recently, RRR won the Best Director trophy for SS Rajamouli at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards. This win has taken the film's Oscar chances up a notch.
