Delhi: No decision could be taken today on the name of the opposition candidate for the presidential election. In the meeting called by Mamta Banerjee, leaders of many opposition parties asked Sharad Pawar to become a candidate, but he flatly refused. Even before this he had refused many times. Now the opposition parties will once again meet in Delhi next week to discuss the new name. Sources privy to the whole matter said that Sharad Pawar clearly said that I am still in active politics and do not want to contest the presidential election.

After the meeting, Mamta Banerjee said that this is just the beginning. We had demanded Sharad Pawar ji to become the candidate, but he did not agree. In such a situation all the parties will once again consider a candidate and talk to Sharad Pawar ji. Last week, Mamata Banerjee wrote a letter to 22 leaders of non-BJP parties and demanded a common candidate for the presidential election. The letters to whom Mamta wrote include the CMs of 8 states and Sonia Gandhi, the President of Congress.

However, even after the invitation of Mamta Banerjee, Aam Aadmi Party, BJD, Akali Dal, Telangana Rashtra Samithi did not join. He had said that this is the right time when the opposition parties should discuss the future of Indian politics. Let us inform that on Thursday itself, the Election Commission had announced the dates for the presidential election. Voting for the presidential election is to be held on 18th July and counting of votes will be done on 21st. Significantly, the BJD says that it is too early to discuss this issue now. It should be discussed only after the candidate is announced by NDA.

Sharad Pawar and Praful Patel from NCP attended this meeting. Apart from this, Congress had sent Mallikarjun Kharge, Jairam Ramesh and Randeep Surjewala as its representatives. HD Deve Gowda and Kumaraswamy from JDS had also reached. SP leader Akhilesh Yadav, PDP's Mehbooba Mufti and NC's Omar Abdullah were also present.
