Shilpa-Raj Kundra: Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty and her businessman husband Raj Kundra are once again in legal trouble. The Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) of Mumbai Police has registered a case against both of them in an alleged fraud case of Rs 60 crore. This is not the first time Raj Kundra has been accused of fraud. Earlier in December 2024, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had summoned him in a money laundering case related to the alleged illegal distribution of pornographic films.Complainant and allegationsDeepak Kothari, director and businessman of Lotus Capital Financial Services Limited, has filed a case of financial fraud against Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra. Kothari alleges that the celebrity couple took a loan of Rs 75 crore from him to expand their business, but the amount was used for personal expenses.What is the whole matter?According to the FIR, the complainant claimed that in 2015, Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra approached him through a mediator to take a loan of Rs 75 crore for their company, Best Deal TV Pvt Ltd, known for promoting lifestyle products and an online shopping platform, in which Shetty and Kundra were directors. The loan was promised to pay 12% annual interest.Kothari says the couple later requested to convert the loan into an investment and promised to return a part of the principal every month. Subsequently, around Rs 60 crore was transferred to Best Deal TV's bank accounts under a share subscription agreement in two installments in 2015. However, the amount has not been returned till date. Kothari claimed that several attempts to recover the money failed and accused the couple of "dishonestly misusing" the amount.Celebrity couple's sideShilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra's lawyer Prashant Patil has issued a statement rejecting these allegations. According to him, an attempt is being made to tarnish the image of his clients by making false allegations against them. Patil said, "An alleged case is registered against my clients in the Economic Offenses Wing, Mumbai. My clients deny all these allegations, which are purely civil in nature. The verdict on this matter has been pronounced by NCLT Mumbai on 04/10/2024. This is an old transaction, in which the company went into financial crisis and eventually got entangled in a long legal battle in NCLT."
