Maharashtra News: The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) on Wednesday played down Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis' claim that the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government had tried to put him in jail. Along with this, BJP asked the senior leader of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that in which case he was afraid of arrest.

An editorial in Shiv Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana' claimed that IPS officers had threatened MVA MLAs for supporting Fadnavis and spied on them by tapping their phones. The editorial said that Fadnavis should tell whether such 'illegal' phone tapping is a crime or not.

The Marathi newspaper said that incidents of arrest of political opponents and harassment of their family members have never been seen in the political culture of Maharashtra.

Fadnavis had made this claim

Fadnavis had recently said that the previous MVA government had targeted the then Mumbai police commissioner Sanjay Pandey to put him in jail, but the police officer could not succeed as he had done nothing wrong.

Responding to this, a Saamana editorial on Wednesday asked, 'Why is Fadnavis afraid that he might be arrested?' In what case was he afraid of arrest and what was his connection with the case... Fadnavis should give an explanation.

The editorial claimed, "Fadnavis has been lying outright for the last few days." It added that this is not the "sanskar" of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

The Marathi daily said that the MVA government had registered cases against IPS officer Rashmi Shukla in Pune and Mumbai in connection with the alleged phone tapping.

The editorial said that phones of MVA leaders were illegally tapped during Fadnavis's tenure as chief minister. It claimed that the phone numbers of MVA leaders were extracted for tapping under various names, which are said to be of drug suppliers and terrorists.

there was no need to make an issue of it

The editorial said that Fadnavis should also tell whether such 'illegal' tapping is a crime or not. The investigating officers of the case met Fadnavis when he was the leader of the opposition and took his statement respectfully. The Marathi daily said that there was no need to make it an issue.

The editorial said that MVA leaders Anil Deshmukh, Nawab Malik, Sanjay Raut were unnecessarily arrested by the central investigative agencies. Along with this, it was also said that if the case of phone tapping was not serious, then why was former Mumbai Police Chief Sanjay Pandey arrested in this case.
