IND vs AUS / Shubman Gill Set to Make ODI Captaincy Debut, Eyes Sachin Tendulkar's Unique Record

Shubman Gill will lead India for the first time in ODIs against Australia, starting October 19. He has a chance to emulate Sachin Tendulkar, the only Indian captain to score a century on ODI captaincy debut. Gill is also nearing 3000 ODI runs in the series.

When the squad for the Australia tour was announced, Shubman Gill was entrusted with the captaincy, replacing Rohit Sharma. The year 2025 has been remarkable for Gill in his international career. He previously led India in Tests during the England tour, where he famously scored a century in his very first match as Test captain. Now, with the ODI captaincy, similar expectations are high for his performance. The three-match One Day International series between India and Australia is set to commence on October 19, with young batting sensation Shubman Gill making his debut as India's ODI captain. The Indian team has already arrived in Australia and participated in a practice session at the Perth stadium on October 17. This series marks India's return to the ODI format after a significant break, having last played in the Champions Trophy final recently.

A Chance to Emulate Sachin Tendulkar's Unique Feat

Shubman Gill has a golden opportunity to achieve a rare feat in his maiden ODI as captain. Out of 27 players who have captained India in the ODI format, only Sachin Tendulkar has managed to score a century in his very first match as captain. Tendulkar achieved this milestone with an impressive 110 runs. Gill now has the chance to equal this unique record.

Nearing 3000 ODI Runs Milestone

Beyond the captaincy record, Shubman Gill also has the chance to cross the 3000-run mark in One Day Internationals during this three-match series against Australia. Gill has so far accumulated 2775 runs in 55 ODI matches. If he scores an additional 225 runs in this series, he will reach the significant milestone of 3000 ODI runs, while the first match is on October 19, followed by the second and third on October 23 and 26, respectively.
