Ireland New PM: Ireland has elected a new Prime Minister. The country's ruling Fine Gael party has elected Simon Harris as the new Prime Minister. MP Simon Harris was elected the new Prime Minister of Ireland in a vote in Parliament on Tuesday. He is the youngest person to become the Prime Minister of the country at the age of 37. Harris has created a new record by becoming the PM of Ireland at the age of just 37. Harris replaces Leo Varadkar as head of Ireland's three-party coalition government.

Harris will replace Varadkar

Varadkar made a surprise announcement last month that he was resigning from his post. Simon Harris served as Minister of Higher Education in Varadkar's government. Harris was the only candidate to replace him as head of the centre-right Fine Gael party. MPs in the Dáil, the lower house of the Irish Parliament, paved the way for Harris to be made 'Taoiseach' or Prime Minister by 88 votes against 69. Parliamentary elections are to be held in Ireland next year. In this sense, the new Prime Minister will have a tenure of about one year.

What did Simon Harris say?

Harris was formally appointed to the post by President Michael D Higgins at a ceremony at the President's official residence in Dublin. Harris was first elected to Parliament at the age of 24. He was nicknamed the “TikTok Taoiseach” due to his fondness for communicating on social media. “I am committed to doing everything I can to honor the trust you have placed in me today,” Harris said. “As Taoiseach I want to bring new ideas, new energy and new empathy to public life.”
