Israel-Iran War: Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi has written an important article titled "It is still not too late to hear India's voice", expressing deep concern over the growing tension between Iran and Israel. In this article, she has strongly condemned Israel's attack on Iran and has also raised sharp questions on the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge shared this article on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).Reminded of Iran-India's historical friendshipSonia Gandhi started the article by discussing the historical relations between India and Iran. She said that Iran has been an old and trusted friend of India. In particular, she recalled Iran's role in thwarting the resolution brought against India in the United Nations Human Rights Commission in 1994. Sonia wrote, "When India's position in the world was challenging, Iran stood with us." Imperial regime vs Islamic Republic: Comparison of cooperationSonia Gandhi compared the Indian policy of the Imperial regime and Islamic Republic of Iran and said that Islamic Iran has cooperated much more with India. She also acknowledged that during the Indo-Pak wars of 1965 and 1971, Imperial Iran supported Pakistan, but in the changing political scenario, Iran maintained strong relations with India.Strengthening relations with Israel and India's roleIn the article, Sonia Gandhi also highlighted the growing strategic relations between India and Israel, but also underlined India's responsibility. She wrote that "India has a unique diplomatic opportunity in which it can become a bridge of peace and dialogue." Sonia also said that India's role is not just ideological but is also linked to the security of millions of Indian citizens who are working in West Asia.Criticised Hamas attack, but called Israel's action 'inconsistent'Sonia Gandhi condemned in clear terms the attack on Israel by Hamas on 7 October 2023, but described the Israeli military action as "appalling and inconsistent". She said that "more than 55,000 Palestinians have lost their lives in Gaza so far, hospitals and homes have been destroyed, and Gaza is now on the verge of starvation."Sharp attack on Modi government's foreign policyIn her article, Sonia Gandhi criticized the foreign policy of the Modi government, saying that India has distanced itself from the two-nation solution—which envisions an independent Palestine. She termed it a deviation from India's cultural and moral traditions. Sonia said that the government's silence shows that India is abandoning its diplomatic values.India must play its roleThe article concluded with Sonia Gandhi urging the government, "It is not too late yet. India must play its historic role. It must not only speak clearly, but also take the lead in regional dialogue and tension-reduction." She stressed that this is a time of India's moral duty and global responsibility.
