Sunetra Pawar, leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Maharashtra Deputy CM, officially filed her nomination papers for the Baramati assembly by-election on Monday, while accompanied by senior leaders of the Mahayuti alliance, she submitted her documents to the returning officer. The by-election is scheduled to take place on April 23, following the vacancy created by the untimely death of senior leader Ajit Pawar.
The by-poll in Baramati was necessitated after the former Deputy Chief Minister and NCP stalwart Ajit Pawar passed away in a tragic plane crash on January 28. Sunetra Pawar is contesting this election to carry forward the political legacy of her late husband in the constituency that has long been a stronghold for the family. The counting of votes is set for May 4.
Presence of Mahayuti Alliance Leadership
The nomination filing saw a significant show of strength from the ruling Mahayuti alliance. Sunetra Pawar was joined by NCP leaders Sunil Tatkare, Praful Patel, Chhagan Bhujbal, Dhananjay Munde, and Hasan Mushrif. On top of that, Shiv Sena chief and Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, along with BJP state president Chandrashekhar Bawankule, were present to mark their support. The collective presence of these leaders underscored the alliance's unified front for the upcoming electoral contest.
Emotional Appeal and Political Continuity
Before filing her papers, Sunetra Pawar made an emotional appeal to the residents of Baramati. She requested the voters to extend the same level of support and affection they had consistently shown to the late Ajit Pawar. Describing his passing as a massive loss for both the family and the state, she mentioned that contesting a by-election under such circumstances was never anticipated. She emphasized that every corner of Baramati reflects the developmental work initiated by Ajit Pawar.
Focus on Development and Regional Safety
Sunetra Pawar assured the electorate that the pace of development in Baramati would remain uninterrupted. She committed to maintaining administrative discipline and ensuring that essential services reach every citizen. Key priorities mentioned included ensuring a steady water supply for farmers and making the city safer and crime-free, particularly for women. She stated that the future of Baramati is secure and that she's dedicated to fulfilling the vision set by her predecessor.
Electoral Contest and Key Dates
The Baramati by-election will see a direct contest between the Mahayuti alliance and the opposition. The Congress party has fielded its state secretary, Akash More, as the candidate against Sunetra Pawar. As per the Election Commission's schedule, polling will be conducted on April 23. The results, which will be declared on May 4, are expected to be a significant indicator of the political climate in the region following the recent shifts in state leadership.
