Agneepath Scheme: The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the petition filed against the Agneepath scheme. After hearing Sharma's submissions, a division bench comprising Justice P.S. Narasimha and JB Pardiwala dismissed the petition. What was demanded in the petition

A lawyer said he was not challenging the Agneepath scheme and the matter was limited to completion of recruitment procedures notified earlier for the Army and the Air Force. He further said that exams were postponed many times citing Covid and suddenly in June Agneepath scheme was announced and exams for Air Force were held but results were not released. Refusing to entertain the plea, the bench observed that the candidates have no inherent right to demand completion of the recruitment process. The lawyer insisted that even if these people were recruited, the Agneepath scheme would not be affected.

What is Agneepath scheme?

Agneepath scheme started in June 2022. Under this scheme, about 45-50 thousand youths between the age of seventeen and a half years to 21 years will be recruited in the army every year. Most of these would be out of service after four years of service and only 25 per cent would be selected to continue the service for another 15 years.
