Suvendu Adhikari's First Cabinet: 6 Major Decisions on Border Fencing and Central Schemes

CM Suvendu Adhikari led the first BJP cabinet meeting in West Bengal, approving land for BSF border fencing, implementing central schemes like Ayushman Bharat, and honoring 321 party martyrs. The cabinet also extended the age limit for government jobs by 5 years.

In a landmark move following the formation of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in West Bengal, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari chaired the first historic cabinet meeting. Accompanied by five ministers, the Chief Minister initiated a series of decisive actions aimed at governance, security, and public welfare. This inaugural session was marked by the approval of six major resolutions that signal a significant shift in the state's administrative direction. The meeting began with a formal acknowledgment of the democratic process and the successful conduct of the assembly elections that brought the new administration to power. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari demonstrated immediate administrative control by addressing long-pending issues.

Honoring Martyrs and Ensuring Electoral Gratitude

The cabinet's first order of business was to express profound gratitude to all individuals and organizations involved in conducting free and fair elections in the state. The cabinet formally appreciated the efforts of the Election Commission of India, the observers, the Kolkata Police, and the West Bengal Police for their roles in ensuring a transparent electoral process. Following this, a solemn tribute was paid to 321 BJP workers who lost their lives during various incidents of political violence across the state. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari emphasized that the state government would now take full responsibility for the welfare of the families of these martyrs. He stated, "I offer my humble tribute to those 321 individuals who lost their lives untimely.

Border Security and Land Transfer to BSF

Addressing long-standing security concerns along the international border, the cabinet approved the transfer of necessary land to the Border Security Force (BSF) for the construction of border fencing. This decision specifically targets the India-Bangladesh border to enhance regional security and manage cross-border tensions. The Chief Minister announced that the entire process of land transfer would be expedited and completed within a strict timeframe of 45 days. To ensure the smooth execution of this task, the responsibility has been assigned to the Land and Revenue Secretary along with the Chief Secretary of West Bengal. This move is seen as a critical step in fulfilling the government's commitment to national security and border management.

Implementation of Central Welfare Schemes

A major highlight of the cabinet meeting was the decision to immediately implement several central government schemes that were previously stalled or not adopted by the former administration led by Mamata Banerjee.

Administrative Reforms and Legal Framework

The cabinet also focused on administrative efficiency and the alignment of state laws with central legislation. A significant decision was made to allow IAS and IPS officers in the state to undergo central training programs, while Plus, the government announced the immediate implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in West Bengal. Chief Minister Adhikari noted that the previous government had violated constitutional norms by not implementing the new criminal laws, but the current cabinet has now officially sanctioned their enforcement to compensate for past delays, while On top of that, the cabinet approved the immediate implementation of the Union Home Ministry's June 2025 circular regarding the national census, which had been ignored by the previous regime.

Employment Security and Age Limit Extension

In a move to address the concerns of job seekers in the state, the cabinet approved a five-year extension in the upper age limit for all state government job applications. This decision fulfills a promise previously made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The rationale behind this extension is the lack of significant recruitment in West Bengal since the year 2015. By increasing the age limit by five years, the government aims to provide a fair opportunity to those who were unable to apply for positions during the years when recruitment was stalled. This step is viewed as a decisive measure toward improving governance and ensuring the welfare of the youth in West Bengal. The meeting concluded with the Chief Minister reiterating the government's commitment to a transparent and accountable administration.
