UP Civic Elections: The Supreme Court has put on hold the Allahabad High Court's decision regarding the OBC reservation issue in UP civic elections. In fact, a hearing was held in the Supreme Court today on the petition of the UP government against the order of the High Court to hold body elections without OBC reservation. In this case, the Supreme Court has issued a notice staying a part of the High Court order and has sought a reply within 3 weeks. The Supreme Court has said that a new notification should be issued to start the process of civic body elections.

What did the Supreme Court say?

Significantly, the Supreme Court has stayed the order of the Allahabad High Court, in which Uttar Pradesh was directed to conduct urban local body elections without OBC reservation. The Supreme Court also said, 'The panel appointed by UP has to decide in 3 months the issues related to OBC reservation for local body elections in the state.'

The Supreme Court said, 'In order to ensure that the administration of the local bodies is not disrupted, the UP government will be free to delegate powers after the end of the term. After the end of the tenure of the local bodies, the administrators to whom their powers will be handed over, will not take major policy decisions.
