18 people injured, condition of 4 critical

A bus carrying foreign tourists, including Ukrainians, has plunged off a high bridge near the Italian city of Venice, officials said, killing at least 21 people and injuring 18, the news agency said. Renato Boraso, a Venice city official, said four people injured in Tuesday's crash in the Mestre borough of Venice's historic old city are in serious condition. Venice prefect Michele Di Bari said two children were among the dead.

Venice mayor declares 'urban mourning'

Venice official Borasso confirmed that some of the victims were Ukrainians and that the bus was bringing tourists to a camping site. Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro wrote on Twitter that the scene of the crash was "apocalyptic" and declared "urban mourning" for those killed in the bus crash.

PM Meloni expressed condolences

According to local media, the bus crashed and fell a few meters short of Mestre's railway tracks, where it caught fire. Relief and rescue teams are present at the spot. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed deep sorrow after this bus accident. "I am in contact with Mayor Luigi Brugnaro and (Transport) Minister Matteo Salvini to follow up on the news of this tragedy," he said in a statement. Transport Minister Salvini said that the cause of the accident could be the driver suddenly falling ill or becoming unwell.
