Trump Reverses Stance on Russia! Grants Exemptions from Sanctions Law, Bringing Relief to India?

US President Donald Trump has issued an order granting exemptions from several Russia-related sanctions, restrictions, and tariffs, providing potential relief to India and other oil-importing nations.

US President Donald Trump has made a major decision to grant exemptions from several Russia-related sanctions, restrictions, and tariffs. Trump announced this development by issuing an official order. These sanctions and duties were scheduled to take effect under a law that Trump himself had signed just last month. However, just days before they were set to be enforced, President Trump announced exemptions across multiple rules, while trump’s decision comes at a time when his overall stance regarding Russia appears to be softening. At the same time, he has been publicly and sharply criticizing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, even stating that Ukraine needs to choose a new leader.

The Provision of Up To 100 Percent Tariff on Oil Buyers

The key leader who advanced this legislation in the US Congress was Senator Lindsey Graham, who has since passed away. In September, President Trump signed a law titled the ‘Lindsey O, while graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026’. This law was designed to exert severe economic pressure on countries purchasing oil and gas from Russia. According to its provisions, goods imported into the United States from the top five countries purchasing crude oil or natural gas from Russia could face tariffs of up to 100 percent within thirty days.

This rule could also have applied to nations that continued to knowingly purchase oil or gas from Russia even after thirty days of the law's enactment. On top of that, strict action was provisioned against the top five key nations that helped Russia evade international sanctions.

India and Other Nations Had Expressed Concern

Since India is among the major global nations purchasing oil from Russia, countries like India and China had expressed serious concerns regarding this law. If imported goods from these countries into the US were subjected to tariffs of up to 100 percent, it would have severely impacted their trade within the American market. According to available data, the primary countries importing the highest volumes of Russian oil include China, India, Azerbaijan, Hungary, and Slovakia.

Citing United States National Interest

In an order released by the White House on Friday, President Trump stated that he had informed the US Congress that granting these exemptions at the present time is fully in the national interest of the United States. In this manner, Trump has exempted several sanctions and duties from taking effect before they could be fully implemented, while however, the available official statement didn't specify the exact list of restrictions and tariffs that have been granted these exemptions, though the move marks a significant shift in US trade policy regarding the matter.
