India-US Tariff War: US President Donald Trump has announced the suspension of trade talks with India. He told reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday that there will be no trade deal with India until the tariff issue is resolved. The Trump administration recently imposed an additional 25 percent tariff on Indian goods, taking the total tariff to 50 percent. The move was taken over India's import of Russian oil, which the Trump administration described as a threat to national security and foreign policy. The White House executive order claimed that India's import of Russian oil, whether direct or through intermediaries, poses an unusual and extraordinary threat to the US. Trump sought to stop Russian oil imports from India, but India's Foreign Ministry rejected it, citing economic and energy security needs.India's tough stand: PM Modi's statementPrime Minister Narendra Modi took a tough stand on the issue and said that India will not compromise on the interests of its farmers, livestock farmers and fishermen. Speaking at the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi, he said, "For us, the interest of farmers is the top priority. India will not bow down to any external pressure. We may have to pay a heavy price, but we are ready for it."Modi ruled out opening up India's agriculture and dairy sector to global markets, saying it would harm millions of rural families. His statement further strengthened India's stance, which considers the US tariff move as unfair.Ministry of External AffairsIndia's Ministry of External Affairs also strongly condemned the US move. The ministry said in its statement, "This move by the US is wrong, unjustified and unjustified. India's oil imports from Russia are for economic needs and to ensure energy security of 1.4 billion Indians, and not for political reasons." The ministry clarified that India's import policy decision is based on market demand and national interests.Impact on India-US trade relationsThis dispute can create a new tension in the trade relationship between India and the US. India has always insisted on protecting its agricultural sector, and Trump's move has further deepened the already ongoing tariff dispute between the two countries. Experts believe that this situation may further complicate trade talks between the two countries.
