New Delhi : The Supreme Court has taken a tough stand in the contempt case against the drunken businessman Vijay Mallya. Mallya has been sentenced to four months' imprisonment. Along with this, the court has also imposed a fine of Rs. The court has taken this action against Mallya in the 2017 case.

According to media reports, the court was very upset with Mallya's repeated non-appearance. The top court has also said that if the fine amount is not deposited on time, Mallya will have to undergo imprisonment for two more months. A bench of Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, Justice S Ravindra Bhatt and Justice PS Narasimha gave this verdict.

According to the language, the court had on March 10 reserved its decision on fixing the quantum of sentence in the case and observed that there can be no progress in the trial against Mallya. Mallya was convicted in 2017 for contempt. The apex court had dismissed the review petition filed by Mallya in 2020 for review of the 2017 verdict. Mallya has been living in the UK since March 2016. On 18 April 2017, Scotland Yard granted him bail on an extradition warrant.

In 2017 the top court found Mallya guilty of contempt for hiding information from the court about sending $40 million to his children in violation of the order. During this, the court has ordered Mallya to repay $ 40 million with interest in four weeks. Also, if Mallya fails to do so, his properties will be attached.

The petition was filed on behalf of the State Bank of India-led consortium. The petition said that Mallya had allegedly transferred $40 million received from British company Diageo to his children, which was in violation of judicial orders. The court had given its verdict in the year 2017 on the basis of the petition itself.
