Don't fight over hijab and saffron. When we see such things, we feel sad.' This is the last message from Havaldar Altaf Ahmed, martyr in Kashmir avalanche on Wednesday. This last voice message sent from 37-year-old Altaf's mobile before he lost his life was shared by his fellow soldiers with the media on Friday.

In a voice note shared by the soldier's friends with the media, Altaf is appealing to the countrymen to put aside their differences. Altaf says, 'Be fine. Don't fight in the name of religion and caste. Our soldiers put their lives on the line while serving here (Kashmir), so that you remain healthy and safe. Think of the nation and teach your children to do the same.

Altaf further says in the voice note, 'Don't fight over hijab and saffron. We feel sad when we see such things. While performing our duty here, we believe that the people of the country are good. Also believe that we all are children of Mother India. Don't waste our sacrifices, please. When we hear about such things (hijab controversy), we feel bad, because many people are sacrificing their lives in front of our eyes at the border.

Martyr's family is living in Kerala

Altaf, a resident of Kodagu, who was part of the Army Ordnance Corps, was posted in Kashmir. He leaves behind a mother, wife, a son and a daughter. Altaf's wife Juberi has been living in Mattanur district of Kerala for 10 years. She is originally from Yadpala in Virajpet. Growing up in Meenupete, Altaf completed his 10th standard from St. Anne's School in Virajpet. After this he completed his studies from Virajpet Government Junior College. Then, joined the Army Ordnance Corps regiment. He was working in it for 19 years.
