Ministry wrote letter to states and union territories

Earlier, on Tuesday, the Health Ministry urged all states and union territories to increase genome sequencing of samples found infected to monitor the new form of the virus.

In a letter to states and union territories, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said such an exercise would enable timely detection of new variants of the virus in the country and ensure necessary public health measures.

Union Health Secretary mentions that with focus on the strategy of Test-Surveillance-Treat-Vaccination and adherence to COVID-appropriate behaviour, India has been able to limit the spread of Corona Virus infection and about 1,200 cases on a weekly basis are coming. Bhushan said that the public health challenge of Kovid-19 still remains worldwide, with about 3.5 million cases being reported weekly.

Bhushan said, "In view of the sudden spurt in cases in Japan, USA, Republic of Korea, Brazil and China, samples of infection cases are being analyzed through the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium to trace the virus patterns." It is necessary to prepare complete genome sequencing.
