West Bengal EVM Fire: 4000 Machines Destroyed in Kolkata Building, Sabotage Suspected

A massive fire broke out in a nine-story government building in the Alipore area of South Kolkata, leading to the destruction of approximately 4000 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). The incident has sparked significant concern and a high-level investigation by the local authorities. The building, which houses various government departments, also contains the office of the South 24 Parganas District Council. Following the incident, the police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) and initiated a comprehensive probe into the matter. The primary focus of the investigation is to determine whether the fire was a tragic accident or a result of deliberate sabotage.

West Bengal Minister Kaushik Chowdhury provided details regarding the extent of the damage. He confirmed that around 4000 EVMs were reduced to ashes in the blaze. These specific machines were of critical importance as they had been utilized during the state assembly elections held earlier this year. According to the minister, the EVMs were used across 10 different election constituencies. The loss of such a large number of voting machines has raised questions about the security and storage protocols of sensitive election equipment within government facilities.

Suspicious Patterns in the Fire Spread

Minister Kaushik Chowdhury, after conducting a personal visit to the site, expressed deep suspicions regarding the nature of the fire. He noted that the fire didn't appear to be a normal occurrence. One of the most baffling aspects of the incident is the pattern in which the flames spread through the nine-story structure. Reports indicate that the fire was first spotted on the second and third floors of the building. However, it somehow managed to reach the seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth levels while leaving the fourth, fifth, and sixth floors largely unaffected.

The minister questioned how the fire could bypass multiple middle floors to ignite the upper sections of the building. " Chowdhury remarked to reporters. He emphasized that the possibility of sabotage is being actively investigated to rule out any foul play. The authorities are currently awaiting the forensic report to gain a clearer understanding of the fire's origin and behavior.

Legal Action and Police Investigation

In response to the incident, the South 24 Parganas administration has taken formal legal steps. A written complaint was filed at the Alipore Police Station seeking a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire. The complaint was lodged by the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) of the district. Based on this complaint, the police have registered an FIR and commenced their inquiry. Investigators are looking into various possibilities, including whether the fire was caused by a short circuit or other technical failures, while as of now, officials stated that no specific cause has been definitively identified.

Forensic Analysis and Security Measures

The investigation is heavily reliant on scientific evidence. Forensic experts are expected to conduct a detailed examination of the site and collect samples to identify the exact source of the ignition. Officials have pointed out that the forensic findings will be pivotal in determining if the fire was accidental or a premeditated act. Also, BJP leader Rakesh Singh alleged that the fire was a planned act. While these claims have been made publicly, no evidence supporting these allegations has been released to the public yet, while investigating officers have maintained that their conclusions will be based strictly on forensic analysis and scientific proof.
