The news of levying extra charge on UPI payment is going viral on social media, but the Finance Ministry has completely rejected it. The ministry said that such rumors are baseless and the government is committed to promoting digital payment. UPI has even surpassed Visa.

UPI Payment: UPI Payment: In recent times, the rumor is spreading rapidly on social media and other platforms that the government is preparing to charge extra on UPI payments, especially from shopkeepers. This viral claim has worried millions of UPI users across the country. But now a clear and official statement has come from the Ministry of Finance on this whole matter, which has alleviated the concerns of the people to some extent.

Finance Ministry denies rumor

The Finance Ministry has posted on its official social media account 'X' (earlier Twitter) and described these reports as "baseless, misleading and rumor". The ministry said that there is neither any plan to impose any additional charge on UPI payments nor is any such proposal under consideration with the government. The ministry also said that promoting UPI is the priority of the government and it is an important step towards promoting digital transactions.

It was also clarified by the government that by spreading such rumors, some people are unnecessarily creating an atmosphere of panic and confusion, which is completely inappropriate.

Growing dominance of UPI

  • The popularity of UPI payment system has now reached its peak. In early June 2025, UPI has set a new record.
  • On June 1, 2025, 64.4 crore UPI transactions were recorded.
  • On June 2, this figure crossed 65 crores.
At the same time, the average transaction for the first three days of June was 64.8 crores, which is an achievement in itself.

In comparison, a total of 64 crore transactions were done with Visa cards in the financial year 2024. In this sense, UPI is not only growing rapidly, but it has now overtaken traditional payment methods.
