The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced a significant technical update for Unified Payments Interface (UPI) users across the country. Major payment applications, including PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, and BHIM, have commenced the rollout of biometric authentication features, while under this new update, users are no longer required to manually enter their UPI PIN for transactions up to ₹5,000. Instead, they can authenticate payments using their smartphone's fingerprint sensor or Face ID. According to officials, this move is aimed at making digital transactions more smooth, faster, and user-friendly for daily micro-payments.
Expansion Across Platforms and Devices
According to reports, the biometric payment feature was initially available on a trial basis for select Android applications such as Amazon Pay and PhonePe. However, NPCI has now enabled this feature for all major UPI service providers. A significant development in this rollout is the extension of the service to iOS users. iPhone users can now work with Face ID to complete their transactions, while Android users have the option of using either fingerprint scanning or facial recognition. This cross-platform availability ensures that a vast majority of smartphone users in India can access the enhanced payment method regardless of their device's operating system.
Transaction Limits and Security Framework
To maintain a balance between convenience and security, NPCI has capped biometric-authenticated transactions at ₹5,000. For any transaction exceeding this amount, the traditional UPI PIN will still be mandatory as an additional security layer. According to technical specifications, biometric data remains stored within the device's Secure Element and isn't shared with the payment application or the NPCI servers, ensuring high-level privacy. This feature is specifically designed for high-frequency, low-value transactions. Data suggests that a substantial portion of daily UPI transactions in India falls within the sub-₹5,000 category, making this update highly relevant for the masses.
Technical Implementation and User Activation
To work with this feature, users must first update their respective UPI applications to the latest version available on the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Once updated, users need to navigate to the settings menu within the app and locate the 'Biometric Payment' or 'Pay With Face ID' option. After selecting the specific bank account they wish to enable for this feature, users will be prompted to enter their UPI PIN once to authenticate the setup. Following this one-time activation, the app will automatically offer the biometric scan option for future transactions, bypassing the need for manual PIN entry during the checkout process.
Enhancing the Digital Payment Experience
NPCI officials state that the introduction of biometric authentication will Notably reduce the time taken to complete a transaction. In high-traffic retail environments, entering a PIN can be time-consuming and prone to errors or 'shoulder surfing' risks. Biometric authentication mitigates these issues by providing a contactless and more secure verification method. This technology is expected to be particularly beneficial for senior citizens or new digital payment users who may find it difficult to remember multiple PINs. The shift is projected to improve the overall transaction success rate by reducing failures caused by incorrect PIN entries.
NPCI Strategic Vision for UPI
This update aligns with the broader strategic vision of the NPCI and the Government of India to foster a solid digital and cashless economy. Following the success of UPI Lite, biometric authentication is viewed as the next evolutionary step in digital finance. According to officials, the objective is to simplify the user journey without compromising the underlying security protocols of the UPI infrastructure. As the digital payment ecosystem continues to mature, more Payment Service Providers (PSPs) are expected to integrate these advanced authentication methods, ensuring a standardized and efficient experience for users nationwide.
