United Nations/Geneva. The World Health Organization (WHO) on Sunday honored one million women ASHA volunteers from India. This honor has been given to ASHA volunteers for their important role in providing health facilities in rural areas and in the campaign against corona virus epidemic in the country. Accredited Social Health Activists or ASHA volunteers are health workers affiliated to the Government of India who work in rural areas. During the peak of the corona virus epidemic in India, ASHA workers came into the limelight especially for conducting door-to-door investigations to trace patients.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced the six awards on Sunday. These awards are given to advance global health, demonstrate leadership and commitment to regional health issues. Director General Ghebreyesus decided the winners for the 'Global Health Leaders Award'. These awards were instituted in 2019 and the award ceremony was part of the high-level inaugural session of the 75th World Health Assembly.

The WHO said that there is hope among respected people, which means hope in Hindi. Over one million women volunteers in India were honored for playing a vital role in connecting the community to the health system. "At a time when the world is simultaneously facing inequality, conflict, food insecurity, the climate crisis and a pandemic, this award is for those who have contributed to protecting and promoting health around the world," said the WHO Director-General.
