Bihar Elections 2025 / Why did the opposition parties go silent on the draft voter list? EC did not receive any objection

The SIR issue has become a political issue ahead of the Bihar assembly elections. The opposition is alleging that votes are being stolen, while the Election Commission claims that no party has lodged an official objection so far. The commission has appealed to eligible voters to get included in the list.

Bihar Elections 2025: The issue of Special Voter List Revision (SIR) ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections is much discussed in political circles. The opposition, especially the Congress, has made several serious allegations, terming it "vote theft". Amidst these allegations, the Election Commission has made a big disclosure, according to which not a single formal objection has been lodged by the opposition so far. This is the situation when the Election Commission has repeatedly appealed to all political parties and citizens to file claims and objections for correction in the voter list.

Election Commission's stand

The Election Commission has clarified that its objective is to make the final voter list of Bihar completely transparent and fair. The Commission says that no eligible voter should be left out of the list and no ineligible voter should be included in it. For this, the draft voter list of Bihar was released on August 1, 2025. To correct any error in this list, the Commission had called upon all parties to file claims and objections. However, even after 9 days have passed, no political party has lodged any formal claim or objection.

Uproar in Parliament

The monsoon session of Parliament witnessed a huge uproar by the opposition over SIR. Opposition parties, especially the Congress and the RJD, alleged that the Election Commission was colluding with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to delete the names of voters through SIR, which they termed as "vote theft". There was a heated debate in Parliament on this issue, which affected the smooth conduct of the session. The opposition raised serious questions on the government and the Election Commission over the issue, but they lagged behind in filing concrete evidence or formal complaint.

Opposition's silence

After the Election Commission released the draft voter list, it had appealed to all political parties and common citizens that if anyone's name has been deleted by mistake, they can correct it by submitting the required documents. Despite this, no political party has lodged any objection so far. Bihar Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav had said on public platforms that he and his party Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) would do everything possible to prevent "vote theft". However, no formal objection or claim has been lodged from his side either.
