The Delhi High Court will pronounce its verdict on Monday, June 13, on a plea by CPIM leader Brinda Karat challenging a lower court's decision. The trial court had dismissed Vrinda Karat's plea seeking registration of an FIR against Union Minister Anurag Thakur and BJP MP Parvesh Verma for allegedly making inflammatory speeches in the year 2020.

A division bench of Justice Chandradhari Singh, which had reserved its order on March 25, 2022, will pronounce its verdict on Monday.

In October 2021, Brinda Karat had challenged the trial court's order which was set aside on the ground that the requisite clearances from the competent authority were not obtained as required under the law.

The trial court, in its order, had held that as per Section 196 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) at the stage of ordering registration of FIR, prior approval of the competent authority of the Central Government is necessary as both the persons are Members of Parliament.

CPI(M) leaders Brinda Karat and K.M. Tiwari had lodged a complaint before the trial court and sought a direction to the Sansad Marg police station to register an FIR against Anurag Thakur and Parvesh Verma.

Karat, through a petition, filed a complaint against Anurag Thakur and Parvesh Verma to the Delhi Police under IPC sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race), 153B (allegations, claims prejudicial to national-unity). ), 295A (deliberate and malicious act intended to hurt religious sentiments) and 505 (statement causing public mischief).
