Student Union Elections / 12 year old record broken in JNU Students Union elections, total 73 percent votes cast

Student Union Elections: 73 percent voting took place on Friday for the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) elections, which is the highest in the last 12 years. The election committee said the JNUSU elections were held in two phases, which were delayed due to logistical arrangements. Voting took place after a gap of four years and more than 7,700 registered voters cast their votes through secret ballot.

Due to delay in voting, counting of votes is also being delayed which was to start at 9 pm. JNUSU results will be declared on Sunday after the counting of votes is completed. A total of 17 polling stations were set up in various study centers for voting. Voting started around 11 am and continued till 7 pm.

What percentage of voting in JNU in the last years?

The voter turnout in JNU was 67.9 percent in 2019, 67.8 percent in 2018, 59 percent in 2016-17, 55 percent in 2015, 55 percent in 2013-14 and 60 percent in 2012. When voters were standing in queues to cast their votes at their respective centres, supporters of various student organizations raised slogans in favor of their leaders.

The atmosphere became heated with slogans of 'Jai Bhim', 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and 'Lal Salaam' accompanied by the beat of drums as a large number of students started gathering at the polling stations after 11 am. A total of 19 candidates are in the fray for the central panel of JNUSU, while 42 people are trying their luck for the post of school councilor. There is a contest between eight candidates for the post of Student Union President. The Central Panel consists of Chairman, Vice Chairman, Joint Secretary and General Secretary.
