Tamilnadu : Normal life was affected as heavy rains continued in various parts of Tamil Nadu with four people killed and over 60 houses damaged in rain-related incidents. Due to the heavy rains, many reservoirs were flooded and many roads looked like overflowing rivers. Officials said on Monday that an alert has been issued for people living in low-lying areas in some parts of the state. Due to rain in the catchment areas of various reservoirs, there has been a situation of release of excess water.

Most of the roads and streets in Chennai are waterlogged. The low-lying areas were flooded with water up to two feet. Traffic was also affected due to this. In view of security, power supply has been stopped in many localities. A police station affected by the floods had to be converted into a temporary building. At least 75 trees were uprooted in the city which are being cleared by the municipal workers. Monsoon rains continued throughout the day.

Southern Railway said minimum services will be available in Chennai suburban area on November 9 due to rain and water-logging. Meanwhile, the government said in a release that out of 290 waterlogged areas, 59 areas were waterlogged using heavy equipment and swift action was being taken to clear the remaining 231 areas.

Rain took 4 lives in 24 hours

Four people died in rain-related incidents in Chennai, Theni and Madurai districts in the last 24 hours. During this 16 cattle also died. So far 1,107 people have been kept in 48 relief camps in Chennai and a total of 3,58,500 food packets have been distributed. In many other districts also people have been kept in relief camps and they are being provided with food and other basic facilities.

The Meteorological Department has asked the districts of Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Theni, Tenkasi and Tirunelveli to be on 'alert' on Tuesday. In a bulletin, the department said that a low pressure area is expected to form over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas during the next 24 hours. It is expected to reach north Tamil Nadu coast by the morning of November 11 and cause heavy rainfall in many areas of the state. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea for fishing between November 9 and 12.

The Meteorological Department said in a bulletin that a cyclonic circulation is persisting over Southeast Bay of Bengal and over neighboring South Andaman Sea. Under its influence, a low pressure area is expected to form over the southeast and adjoining parts of the Bay of Bengal in the next 24 hours. It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and turn into a depression and reach near north Tamil Nadu coast by morning on November 11, due to which many areas of the state will get rain.
