A stampede broke out at actor Vijay's rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, on Saturday evening, killing 36 people. The deceased included 16 women, 9 men, and 6 children, Tamil Nadu Health Minister M.A. Subramanian said. More than 30 people were injured in the accident. It is feared that the death toll may rise.
According to reports, a large number of people had gathered for the rally of actor-turned-politician Vijay's party, Tamilga Vetti Kazhagam (TVK). It is reported that a 9-year-old girl had gone missing. Vijay appealed to the police and his supporters from the stage to find her, leading to a stampede-like situation.
Many people struggled to breathe due to being trapped in the crowd, and several people and activists began to faint. Seeing the situation worsen, Vijay stopped his speech and appealed for calm. He then left.
Vijay's rally had a permission limit of 10,000 people. The administration had estimated a gathering of 50 thousand people, but around 1 lakh 20 thousand people had gathered there.
