The Taliban have occupied four provincial capitals since Friday in a swift offensive that appears to have overwhelmed government forces. "After fierce fighting, with God's grace, the mujahedin faction captured the capital of present-day Kunduz province," the Taliban said in a statement.

In the town of Kunduz in northeastern Afghanistan, Taliban gunmen seized key government buildings, forcing government forces to cling to control of the airport and their own base.

Reuters quoted Mohammad Noor Rahmani, a member of the SarePul provincial council, as saying that Taliban fighters had also taken over government buildings in the northern provincial capital. “The government buildings, including the governor's house, the police headquarters and the General Security Directorate, are all occupied by the Taliban,” Rahmani said.

Provincial council member Ghulam Rabani Rabani told Reuters that the Taliban seized the governor's office and police headquarters and took control of the main building of Kunduz prison. Rabani said the fighting was still ongoing at the city's airport and other parts of the city.

Reuters quoted health officials in Kunduz as saying that 14 bodies, including women and children, and more than 30 injured had been taken to hospital.
