Battling a Life-Threatening Illness
Varma recounted that in 2022, while playing an India A series in Bangladesh, he was struck by a severe and life-threatening condition called Rhabdomyolysis during batting. This illness causes muscle tissue to break down, releasing harmful proteins. Like myoglobin into the bloodstream, which can severely damage the kidneys. He vividly recalled the terrifying moments when he was nearing a century; his eyes began. To strain, his fingers became numb, and his entire body stiffened as if turning to stone. He had to retire hurt, and his gloves had to be cut off because his fingers couldn't bend.
Akash Ambani and Jay Shah's Timely Intervention
Tilak Varma expressed profound gratitude to Akash Ambani and then-BCCI Secretary Jay Shah for their crucial efforts in saving his life. He revealed that as soon as his deteriorating health came to light, Akash Ambani immediately contacted Jay Shah. Their combined efforts ensured that Varma was hospitalized without delay and received prompt medical attention. Doctors later informed him that even a slight delay in treatment could have been fatal.
