Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati has issued a provocative statement regarding the alleged theft of donation money intended for the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, while in a direct verbal attack, Swami Avimukteshwaranand targeted Champat Rai, the General Secretary of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, by interpreting the meaning of his name in a derogatory context. The Shankaracharya claimed that reports of theft have emerged from within the organization itself, suggesting that this isn't a recent development but something that has been occurring since the very beginning of the temple's construction process.
The Linguistic Interpretation of Champat
During his address, Avimukteshwaranand provided a linguistic breakdown of the word Champat, while he explained that it's derived from the root word Champ, which signifies the act of running away with something or absconding. By linking this definition to Champat Rai's name, the Shankaracharya insinuated that the name itself reflects the alleged actions involving the temple's funds. He stated that the term Champat means to take something and disappear, directly connecting this to the missing donations. According to him, the misappropriation of funds has been a continuous issue, starting from the Shila Pujan ceremony and persisting through the Bhumi Pujan to the present day.
Allegations of Land Scams and Rapid Wealth
The Shankaracharya further elaborated on the nature of the alleged corruption, pointing towards suspicious land deals in Ayodhya. He mentioned instances where plots of land valued at lakhs of rupees would suddenly skyrocket to valuations of crores within a matter of minutes. This rapid inflation of property prices, he suggested, is indicative of deep-seated financial irregularities. These comments add weight to the ongoing controversy surrounding the acquisition of land by the Trust, which has been a point of contention for several months.
Internal Criticism from Mahant Kamal Nayan Das
The controversy has also drawn criticism from within the religious community associated with the temple. Mahant Kamal Nayan Das, the successor to the President of the Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, has called for a rigorous investigation into the matter. While he refrained from making extensive comments, he emphasized that those found guilty must face strict punishment. Kamal Nayan Das pointed out the stark contrast in the financial status of certain individuals involved, noting that people who once struggled to afford a bicycle now own massive buildings, while he expressed his hope that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, whom he described as an honest leader, would take decisive action. He stressed that the ongoing allegations are causing significant damage to the reputation of the temple and called for a judicial inquiry to clear the air.
Political Fallout and Trust Response
The issue gained political momentum after Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav recently claimed that there is no clear accounting for the hundreds of crores of rupees donated by devotees. Yadav alleged that a significant portion of the funds has gone missing. In response, Champat Rai has vehemently denied all accusations, maintaining that every transaction is handled with complete transparency and is subject to regular audits. However, these assurances have failed to satisfy the opposition and have led to a surge of questions on social media platforms. Given that the Ram Mandir is a focal point of faith for millions of devotees across the country, both the Central Government and the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government are reportedly keeping a close watch on the situation to ensure that the sanctity of the donations is maintained.
