BCCI’s Special Plan for Jasprit Bumrah: Focus on WTC and 2027 World Cup

The BCCI has formulated a strategic workload management plan for Jasprit Bumrah to ensure his availability for the World Test Championship (WTC) and the 2027 ODI World Cup. The board is also preparing new roles for youngsters like Devdutt Padikkal, Dhruv Jurel, and Ruturaj Gaikwad.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has devised a specialized roadmap for star pacer Jasprit Bumrah to safeguard his fitness for the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) cycle and the 2027 ODI World Cup. As the Indian team prepares to return to international cricket in June, the board is focusing on long-term player management. This strategic shift aims to ensure that key assets like Bumrah remain peak-conditioned for the most critical formats and tournaments over the next few years.

Strategy for WTC and 2027 ODI World Cup

Following the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2026, the BCCI has shifted its focus toward the WTC Final scheduled for next year and the ODI World Cup in 2027. While the WTC Final is a year away, India's qualification depends heavily on the Test matches scheduled for this year. India is set to play a Test match against Afghanistan in June. Although this fixture isn't part of the World Test Championship cycle, the BCCI views it as a vital preparation ground for the challenges ahead, while winning the upcoming Tests is mandatory for India to secure a spot in the WTC Final.

Workload Management and T20I Break for Bumrah

Managing Jasprit Bumrah's workload remains a top priority for Indian cricket. According to reports citing TOI, the BCCI intends for Bumrah to participate in all crucial Test matches of the current WTC cycle, while while he might skip the non-WTC Test against Afghanistan, his presence is deemed essential for the series against New Zealand and Sri Lanka. Also, the high-stakes five-match Test series against Australia in January remains a focal point. To maintain his longevity, Bumrah might be rested from certain ODI series and is likely to stay away from T20 Internationals for the next two years, given the absence of major T20 events in that period.

WTC Points Table and Upcoming Test Series

Currently, Team India finds itself in a challenging position, ranked 6th in the World Test Championship points table. To revive their chances of reaching the final, the BCCI is targeting victories in the four upcoming Tests against Sri Lanka and New Zealand. The board recognizes that navigating a packed international calendar while maintaining the fitness of primary fast bowlers will be a significant hurdle. The upcoming series are viewed as the definitive path to climbing back up the standings.

New Roles for Padikkal, Jurel, and Gaikwad

In addition to managing senior players, the BCCI is looking to integrate younger talents into the middle order. Plans are being discussed to provide consistent opportunities to Devdutt Padikkal, Dhruv Jurel, and Ruturaj Gaikwad. While Jurel is a wicketkeeper-batsman, the board is also evaluating him as a specialist middle-order batter. Devdutt Padikkal is being considered for the crucial number three position, a spot that has seen several unsuccessful experiments recently. Ruturaj Gaikwad is also being factored into the middle-order strategy to provide stability and depth to the batting lineup.
