After December 1993, there was a ban on entering the barricaded area in the courtyard of Gyanvapi, after which puja was not taking place in the basement of Vyas ji. The rituals of attachment and indulgence had also stopped. The Hindu side also claimed in the court that worship was held here even during the British rule. Materials related to the worship of Hindu religion and many ancient sculptures and other materials of religious importance are present in the said basement.

Kashi Vishwanath Trust will conduct the puja work

The court of District Judge Ajay Krishna Vishwesh has given the right to perform puja in the basement to Vyas ji's grandson Shailendra Pathak. In his order, the District Judge has directed the District Magistrate to make arrangements within seven days for the worship of the idols located in the basement of Vyas ji and offering of raga to the priest decided by the plaintiff Shailendra Vyas and Kashi Vishwanath Trust. Kashi Vishwanath Trust will do the work of conducting the puja. The road will be opened by removing the barricading in front of Nandi Maharaj sitting in front of the Vajukhana of Gyanvapi Masjid.

On Tuesday, arguments from both the parties were completed in the court of District Judge Ajay Krishna Vishwesh on the application regarding worship in the basement of Vyasji located in Gyanvapi complex. The Hindu side said that till November 1993, Somnath Vyas ji's family used to worship in that basement, which was closed during the reign of the then Mulayam Singh Yadav government and now Hindus should get the right to worship there again. The Muslim side had objected to this and said that Vyas ji's basement is a part of the mosque, hence worship cannot be allowed in it.

The court said that regular puja will be done here. However, after the order of the district court, the Muslim side raised objection and said that they will appeal against the order in the High Court.

Now the question arises that what is the dispute related to the basement? Actually, Somnath Vyas's family used to worship in the basement till 1993. But, after November 1993, worship in the basement was stopped. On the orders of the then state government i.e. Mulayam Singh, the puja in the basement was stopped.

Somnath Vyas's grandson had filed a petition

A petition was filed in September 2023 demanding worship in the basement. The petition demanding worship was made by Shailendra Pathak, grandson of Somnath Vyas ji. The petition demanded that the basement be handed over to the DM. After which this matter was heard several times in the court. On January 17, the basement was taken into possession by the district administration and today i.e. on January 31, the Varanasi District Court gave its verdict regarding worshiping in the basement.

What was the claim of the Hindu side?

The Hindu side had claimed about the basement that Vyas ji used to worship at that place till the year 1993. But later, following the orders of the administration, worshiping in the basement was banned. Anjuman Arrangement had objected to this argument of the Hindu side. Please note that the petition was filed in September 2023.

The then state government had given orders

In November 1993, when Mulayam Singh Yadav was in power in Uttar Pradesh, on his verbal orders the puja in Vyas ji's basement in the Gyanvapi campus was stopped. Varanasi District Court, while giving its verdict today, said that it gives the right to Somnath Vyas's family to worship in the basement.
