Rajasthan Politics / BJP MLA Kanwar Lal's membership from Anta ends, Assembly Speaker 'dismisses' him

Rajasthan Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani cancelled the membership of BJP MLA from Anta, Kanwarlal Meena. Meena was sentenced to three years in a 2005 case. This step was taken after not getting relief from the Supreme Court. Congress called the decision a "victory of the Constitution".

Rajasthan Politics: A major development was seen in Rajasthan politics on Friday when the assembly membership of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Kanwarlal Meena from Anta was canceled. This decision was taken by the Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani in the light of the orders of the High Court and the Supreme Court. With this, the Anta assembly seat (district Baran) is now vacant.

What is the matter?

This whole matter is of the year 2005, when Kanwarlal Meena pointed a revolver at an administrative officer—SDM during the deputy sarpanch election. After this incident, he also allegedly destroyed the video recording of that time. During the hearing of the case, the local court of Aklera on 14 December 2020 sentenced him to three years imprisonment, convicting him of obstructing government work, threatening officials and damaging public property.

This sentence was also upheld by the Rajasthan High Court, and recently the Supreme Court also refused to stay it. Under the Indian Constitution, if an MLA or MP is sentenced to three years or more, his membership is automatically cancelled. On this basis, the Speaker of the Assembly took legal action and cancelled Meena's membership.

Congress's sharp stance

After this decision, the Congress party reacted sharply. State President Govind Singh Dotasara wrote "Satyamev Jayate" on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and said that the BJP was forced to take this decision after the continuous pressure of the Congress party and the 'contempt petition' filed in the High Court by Leader of Opposition Tikaram Julie.

Tikaram Julie also termed it as a victory of democracy and the dignity of the Constitution and termed it as the result of the struggle of the Congress.

What is the equation in the Assembly now?

After the termination of Kanwarlal Meena's membership, the Rajasthan Assembly now has 118 BJP and 66 Congress MLAs. This is a significant change in the 200-member assembly, especially when discussions are going on about political stability in the state.

Strengthening the judicial process

This development has made it clear that no matter which political party a person belongs to, everyone is equal before the law. This decision not only underlines the transparency of the judicial process, but also shows that legislators are required to meet high ethical and legal standards.
