BJP Sends 100 Crore Legal Notice To CM Omar Abdullah Over Horse Trading Allegations

The BJP has issued a 100 crore rupee legal notice to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah following his allegations of horse-trading. The party demands proof or a public apology regarding claims of offering 20 to 30 crore rupees to National Conference MLAs.

The political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a sharp escalation in tensions as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) initiated significant legal action against Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The party has officially sent a legal notice worth 100 crore rupees to the Chief Minister, accusing him of making defamatory statements and attempting to tarnish the party's public image. This legal confrontation stems from recent allegations made by Omar Abdullah regarding the BJP's alleged attempts to influence National Conference (NC) legislators through financial and political inducements.

Allegations of Operation Lotus and Financial Inducements

The controversy began when Chief Minister Omar Abdullah publicly alleged that the BJP was actively trying to destabilize his government. He claimed that the BJP was executing a strategy similar to "Operation Lotus" in the union territory. According to the Chief Minister, the BJP had approached National Conference MLAs with offers ranging from 20 crore to 30 crore rupees. In addition to the monetary offers, Abdullah alleged that the legislators were being promised ministerial positions and the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood in exchange for their defection. These claims suggested a coordinated effort to break the ruling party's strength in the assembly.

BJP Demands Proof or Unconditional Apology

In response to these serious accusations, the BJP has termed the allegations as completely baseless, unfounded, and defamatory. Through the 100 crore rupee legal notice, the party has challenged the Chief Minister to provide concrete evidence to support his claims. The BJP has stated that Omar Abdullah must either present solid proof of these alleged offers or issue an unconditional public apology for his remarks. The party emphasized that if the Chief Minister fails to comply with these demands, they will proceed with further legal proceedings to protect their reputation.

Sat Sharma Criticizes the Chief Minister's Conduct

Jammu and Kashmir BJP President and Rajya Sabha MP Sat Sharma expressed deep disappointment over the allegations. He stated that Omar Abdullah occupies the highest constitutional office in the union territory, and making such grave accusations against the country's largest political party is highly irresponsible. Sharma argued that the Chief Minister is making these statements solely to distract the public from his government's failures and its inability to fulfill electoral promises. He challenged the Chief Minister to name the specific MLAs who were allegedly offered 20 to 30 crore rupees, asserting that mere allegations without evidence wouldn't be tolerated.

Internal Rifts and Legal Strategy

Sat Sharma further pointed out that there is no need for the BJP to approach National Conference MLAs, suggesting internal dissatisfaction within the ruling party itself. He highlighted that some NC legislators didn't even attend a program organized by the Deputy Chief Minister, questioning why the BJP would need to intervene when the ruling party's own members are showing signs of dissent. The BJP President confirmed that the party has taken this matter very seriously and has already consulted its legal team. A meeting with the legal experts is scheduled to take place during the day to finalize the future course of action and strategy regarding the 100 crore rupee notice.
