Election 2024: Congress has described the resignation of Election Commissioner Arun Goyal as worrying for Indian democracy. Along with this, Congress has asked for clarification regarding this incident. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge claimed that if the destruction of institutions is not stopped, democracy will be taken over by dictatorship.

'Democracy will be captured'

Kharge posted on social media platform 'X' that "India now has only one Election Commissioner while Lok Sabha elections are to be announced in a few days. Why?" Congress President Kharge said that "As I have said earlier, if we do not stop the systematic destruction of our free institutions, our democracy will be taken over by dictatorship." The Congress President claimed that the Election Commission will now be one of the last constitutional institutions to be dismantled. Kharge said that "Modi government should answer these questions and give proper clarification."

Worrying for the health of democracy

At the same time, Congress Organization General Secretary KC Venugopal also said that transparency should be ensured in the functioning of the Election Commission. Venugopal posted on 'X' that "It is a matter of great concern for the health of the world's largest democracy that Election Commissioner Arun Goyal has resigned just before the Lok Sabha elections. How is a constitutional body like the Election Commission working? There is no transparency in this at all.”

Election Commission should clarify the matter

Venugopal accused the government of putting pressure on the Election Commission. Venugopal claimed that “during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Ashok Lavasa had expressed dissent against giving a clean chit to the Prime Minister for violation of the Model Code of Conduct. Later, he faced constant interrogation. This attitude shows that the regime is bent on destroying democratic traditions.'' He said that this development should be clarified and the Commission should be completely non-partisan at all times.

Election Commissioner resigned

Let us tell you that Election Commissioner Arun Goyal resigned from the post on Saturday, a few days before the possible announcement of the 2024 Lok Sabha election schedule. Goyal's tenure was till December 2027. After the retirement of Anup Pandey in February and the resignation of Goyal, the three-member Election Commission now has only Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar.
