India-Canada Relations: Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently reached Kananaskis, Canada to attend the 51st G-7 summit, where he interacted with many top world leaders. But the most important and symbolic meeting was with Canada's new Prime Minister Mark Carney. There has been deep tension in India-Canada relations for the past few years, and this meeting is being considered as the first step towards a possible improvement in the relations between the two countries.Carney's cautious comment on Nijjar issueDuring the meeting, when questions were raised about the murder of Khalistani supporter Hardeep Singh Nijjar and the controversy related to it, PM Carney said in clear words that "the judicial process is going on on this subject, so it is important to be cautious before saying anything on this." He described dialogue with India on law, international cooperation and suppression of terrorism as important. This statement was different from the allegation of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in which he accused the Indian government of being involved in the murder of Nijjar. After Trudeau's allegation, diplomatic relations between the two countries reached a low point, even leading to the withdrawal and expulsion of diplomats.PM Modi's tough stand on terrorismFrom the G-7 platform, PM Modi termed terrorism as the biggest enemy of humanity and criticized the global double standards on this subject. He said, "Double standards on terrorism cannot be tolerated. Countries that support terrorism will have to pay the price for it."He described the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22 as an attack on the soul of every Indian and also added that the "Global South" - that is, developing nations - are most affected by such conflicts. India is committed to becoming the voice of these countries and bringing their priorities to the global forums.Shared concern on global crisesCanadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also underlined the need for peace in the Middle East and described Iran as the main source of regional instability. He reiterated that Iran should not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons under any circumstances.
