SUPREME COURT / 'Don't ask for relief that we can't give', demand for investigation of violence on Ram Navami rejected

The Supreme Court dismissed a PIL seeking a judicial inquiry, headed by a former CJI, to probe the recent communal violence during Ram Navami-Hanuman Jayanti celebrations. The Supreme Court dismissed the petition saying that do not ask for relief which cannot be granted by this court. The Supreme Court called this petition impractical. Let us inform that the bench of Justice L Nageswara Rao and Justice BR Gavai took this decision while hearing the petition of advocate Vishal Tiwari.

Know what was the demand in the petition

Vishal Tiwari, in his petition, had sought a direction to conduct an inquiry into the clashes in Rajasthan, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat during Ram Navami. The PIL also sought a direction to constitute a similar committee to probe the arbitrary actions of 'bulldozer justices' in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh. The plea said that such action is completely discriminatory and does not fit the notion of democracy and rule of law.

Violence erupted in six states during Ram Navami

During the procession of Ram Navami, there was a huge uproar in six states of the country. In Gujarat, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh, miscreants pelted stones on the procession. This sparked violence. One died in Gujarat. There was a ruckus in Delhi's JNU campus over non-veg food during the puja. The miscreants pelted stones at the students. Many students were injured in this.

Violence in Delhi on Hanuman Jayanti

On 16 April 2022, on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti, some mischievous elements pelted stones on the procession being taken out in Jahangirpuri, Delhi. After that the situation worsened. People of both the communities came face to face and started pelting stones. Stones were pelted on the people who were taking out the procession from the roofs. In addition to the vehicles parked on the road, the miscreants vandalized and set fire to some police vehicles. As soon as the information was received, police forces from the surrounding districts were called to the spot. The crowd was dispersed using mild force. After the news of the riot, all the senior officers of Delhi Police reached the spot. Additional security forces were also called to Jahangirpuri.
