Election Commission of India: The Election Commission on Friday, August 1, 2025 announced important dates related to the Vice Presidential election. The election is being held after former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on July 21, 2025 due to health reasons. If voting is required, it will be held on September 9, 2025, and the results will also be declared on the same day.Schedule for Vice Presidential ElectionThe following is the schedule released by the Election Commission:Issuance of election notification: 07 August 2025 (Thursday)Last date for filing nominations: 21 August 2025 (Thursday)Scrutiny of nominations: 22 August 2025 (Friday)Last date for withdrawal of nominations: 25 August 2025 (Monday)Date of poll (if necessary): 09 September 2025 (Tuesday)Polling time: 10:00 AM to 5:00 PMDate of counting of votes (if necessary): 09 September 2025 (Tuesday)Electoral College and Polling ProcessAs per Article 66 of the Constitution of India, the Vice President is elected by an electoral college consisting of members of both the Houses of Parliament (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha). The electoral college for the 17th Vice Presidential Election 2025 consists of:Rajya Sabha: 233 elected members (5 seats vacant) and 12 nominated membersLok Sabha: 543 elected members (1 seat vacant)In total, the electoral college consists of 788 members, of which 782 members are currently active. The value of vote of each member will be 1 (one).Single Transferable Vote MethodThe Vice President is elected through secret ballot under the system of proportional representation by Single Transferable Vote method. The following are the key features of this system:Preference Marking: The voter has to mark his preference against the candidates on the ballot paper. The preference can be marked in Roman numerals, international form of Indian numerals, or in any recognized Indian language.Compulsory Preference: Marking the first preference is mandatory, while other preferences are optional.Use of special pen: Only the special pen provided by the Election Commission must be used for voting. Marking the vote with any other pen will render the ballot paper invalid.Number of preferences: Voters can mark preferences for as many candidates as they want, provided the first preference is mandatory.Importance of Vice Presidential ElectionThe post of Vice President is important in the constitutional framework of India.
