In a circular accessed by The Indian Express, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has decided to field five teams for this WIPL. "In order to have a good balance of domestic and international players and for the competitive teams, it has been decided to include five teams for the WIPL," the circular said.

It further states, "Each team can consist of a maximum of 18 players, where no team can have more than six overseas players. In addition, no more than five overseas players - four from the full members of the ICC and One of the Associate Members of the ICC - may be part of each team's playing XI." Teams outside the IPL can also get a chance, but then the matches will also be held on their grounds.
