Former CDS General Anil Chauhan: Chinese Satellites Failed To Help Pakistan During Operation Sindoor

Former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan has made a significant and startling revelation regarding Operation Sindoor, stating that Pakistan's desperate attempts to verify the impact of its retaliatory strikes through commercial satellite imagery ended in total failure. Speaking at the 'Vimarsh' program organized by the Vivekananda International Foundation in New Delhi on Tuesday, General Chauhan detailed how Pakistan sought assistance from various international sources, including Chinese satellite companies, but couldn't find any evidence of damage to Indian targets. This disclosure sheds light on the intelligence vacuum Pakistan faced during the heightened tensions of 2025.

Pakistan's Reliance on Commercial Satellite Imagery

According to General Chauhan, Pakistan attempted to acquire commercial satellite images to assess the outcomes of its military actions against India. He pointed out that in the modern era, access to high-resolution satellite imagery is no longer restricted to a few powerful nations. Numerous companies in the United States and China now provide these services on a commercial basis, while general Chauhan emphasized that these images are available to anyone willing to pay, and it wasn't a case where only Pakistan had access to Chinese satellite data. He noted that Chinese commercial satellite images are available for anyone to purchase, and several American companies also provide similar commercial satellite imagery. He further explained that China now has multiple companies operating in this sector, providing images on a purely commercial basis.

The Technical Challenges and Waiting Periods

The former CDS also provided a technical perspective on why Pakistan couldn't get immediate results. He explained that obtaining commercial satellite imagery isn't always an instantaneous process. It involves a structured procedure where a contract must be signed with the service provider, payments must be made, and in many instances, there is a significant waiting period before the images are delivered. General Chauhan stated that different companies have different payment and service models, meaning that simply paying money doesn't guarantee immediate access to images of a specific area. He mentioned that there is always a waiting time which depends on the specific contract, and things don't become available immediately. The delivery of images is governed by the specific terms of the agreement and the payment model chosen by the client.

Pakistan's Intelligence Blindness During the Operation

One of the most critical points raised by General Chauhan was that Pakistan was effectively blind regarding the results of its own attacks. He stated that the Pakistani military and leadership were trying to determine whether their strikes had actually hit any intended targets or caused any damage. General Chauhan remarked that he believes Pakistan was blind to the results of their attacks and had no idea what the actual outcomes were. He further revealed that Pakistan continued its frantic search for evidence well after the initial strikes. Even after May 10, they made exhaustive efforts until around May 12 to obtain imagery that could provide some proof of damage to Indian assets, but their efforts yielded no results.

Failure of Chinese Satellite Services to Provide Evidence

The former CDS claimed that when Pakistan failed to find the expected evidence from their initial sources, they turned to other Chinese satellite services in a bid to find any shred of proof. However, despite these multiple attempts, they remained unable to prove that their attacks had successfully hit any targets. General Chauhan explained that unfortunately for Pakistan, when they didn't receive the desired images, they tried other Chinese satellite services as well. But since they had not actually hit any targets, no evidence could be found in any of the satellite photographs they eventually reviewed.

Internal Suspicion and Conspiracy Theories in Pakistan

The lack of evidence led to a state of confusion and suspicion within the Pakistani establishment. General Chauhan noted that when the Pakistani authorities couldn't find any proof of successful strikes, they began to suspect that information was being intentionally hidden from them. This led to the birth of various internal theories. He stated that this created a doubt in their minds that perhaps some people had hidden facts from them. They began to feel that perhaps information was being suppressed due to pressure from India, leading to the circulation of all sorts of speculative theories within Pakistan regarding the failure of their mission.

Background of Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam Attack

The context of these revelations dates back to the events of early 2025. Operation Sindoor was launched by India on May 7, 2025. This military action was a direct response to a major terror attack that took place in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025. The Pahalgam attack had resulted in the tragic death of 26 people. In response, India initiated Operation Sindoor to target the terrorist infrastructure located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. During this operation, India reported that dozens of terrorists were neutralized and several key structures of the Pakistani army were destroyed. The intensity of the Indian response was such that Pakistan eventually appealed for a cessation of hostilities, which subsequently led to a ceasefire.
