Indian Cricket Team Head Coach Gautam Gambhir has shared extensive insights into the team's future and his operational philosophy following India's historic triumph in the T20 World Cup 2026. In a detailed conversation with news agency ANI, Gambhir addressed various criticisms regarding Indian pitches and team selection strategies. He clarified that the Indian squad is capable of posting massive totals not just on home soil but also on challenging overseas tracks. Gambhir also shed light on his appointment process and the roadmap for upcoming ICC tournaments.
Addressing Pitch Allegations and Overseas Performance
During the T20 World Cup, questions were raised regarding the nature of Indian pitches, to which the Head Coach responded firmly. He dismissed allegations that India prepares pitches to suit its own advantage, labeling such claims as attempts to generate controversy and TRP. Gambhir argued that T20 cricket has evolved into a batter-dominated format globally, with high scores becoming the norm across all major cricketing nations.
Citing statistical evidence, the coach pointed out that India has successfully scored over 200 runs in countries like Australia and South Africa. He referenced a specific match in Colombo against Pakistan where India scored nearly 180 runs, while other teams struggled to reach 140 on the same surface. Gambhir emphasized that for ICC tournaments, the responsibility for pitch preparation lies with the International Cricket Council and not the BCCI. He noted that spectators desire high-scoring encounters, which is why such matches are now common in England, New Zealand, and South Africa.
Coaching Philosophy and Decision Making
Discussing his approach as a coach, Gautam Gambhir stated that he prioritizes his own understanding and conscience over data and statistics when making critical decisions. According to him, every coach possesses a unique vision and perspective, and he aims to lead the team in alignment with that vision. Gambhir asserted that if he makes a decision that turns out to be incorrect, he's fully prepared to accept the responsibility for the outcome.
He mentioned that the team's environment, behavior, and overall culture are integral parts of his vision, while while he relies on his intuition, he does engage in technical discussions with experienced figures like VVS Laxman and Ajit Agarkar. Gambhir believes that while data can serve as a supportive tool, real-time decisions on the field must be based on human judgment and a thorough assessment of the prevailing match conditions.
Backing Sanju Samson and Record-Breaking Feats
Regarding the decision to retain Sanju Samson in the squad despite a lean patch during the home series against New Zealand, Gambhir expressed unwavering faith in the player's potential. He explained that form is temporary while talent is permanent. The coach felt that Samson needed a mental break, which was provided to him, allowing the player to return with a fresh mindset.
Sanju Samson validated this trust by scoring 321 runs in the tournament, surpassing Virat Kohli's 2014 record for the most runs in a single edition. He was subsequently named the 'Player of the Tournament', while gambhir praised his performance, stating that the talent of a player who has scored three T20 international centuries can't be questioned. Samson played pivotal innings in must-win games and knockout stages, including a crucial unbeaten 97 against the West Indies.
Reaction to Kirti Azad's Temple Controversy
Gambhir took strong exception to comments made by former cricketer and TMC MP Kirti Azad regarding the team's visit to a temple with the trophy. Following the victory, Captain Suryakumar Yadav, Gambhir, and Jay Shah visited the Hanuman Temple in Ahmedabad to seek blessings. Azad had suggested that sports shouldn't be linked to religion and that the trophy belongs to the entire nation.
In response, Gambhir stated that the T20 World Cup victory was the result of the players' immense hard work and sacrifice. He remarked that making such comments is an insult to the players who handled extreme pressure to achieve success, while former spinner Harbhajan Singh also supported Gambhir's stance, noting that linking a player's personal faith to politics is inappropriate. Gambhir clarified that seeking blessings and celebrating a win is a personal right of the athletes.
Future Roadmap: The World Test Championship Goal
With the T20 World Cup successfully concluded, Gautam Gambhir has set his sights on the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27. He emphasized that Test cricket remains closest to his heart and that winning the WTC title is the team's next primary objective. While India has secured four ICC white-ball trophies in recent years, the WTC title has remained elusive.
Gambhir noted that India has approximately nine Test matches remaining in the current cycle and will continue to provide opportunities to young players in the red-ball format, while he acknowledged that Test cricket is challenging, especially during a transition phase, but assured that players would receive consistent support. According to him, the true legacy of a cricketer is built in Test matches, and the satisfaction of winning a five-day game exceeds that of any limited-overs match.
Appointment Background and Support from Jay Shah
Gambhir also revealed the circumstances surrounding his appointment as the Head Coach. He recounted how Jay Shah, then the BCCI Secretary, called him during IPL 2024 while he was serving as the mentor for Kolkata Knight Riders. Gambhir admitted he wasn't initially prepared for the role, but the confidence shown by Jay Shah convinced him to take on the responsibility.
He further highlighted the support he received during difficult periods. Gambhir recalled feeling low after the home Test series losses against New Zealand and South Africa. During that time, Jay Shah reached out to encourage him and urged him to remain resilient. Gambhir also lauded Shah's administrative contributions, including pay parity for women cricketers and the inclusion of cricket in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
