The Yogi government of Uttar Pradesh has moved towards taking strong steps against love jihad. The UP cabinet on Tuesday passed an ordinance against love jihad. The ordinance provides for imprisonment of up to 10 years for cheating. Also, conversion only in marriage will not be valid. Such marriage shall be treated as void.

According to the ordinance, such marriage can be brought to the void category for the purpose of marriage performed for the sole purpose of conversion of the girl from one religion to another. In addition, there is a provision for a prison term of 1-5 years along with a fine of Rs 15,000 for conversion. If this happens to minors and women belonging to the SC-ST community, there will be a jail term of 3-10 years with a fine of Rs 25,000.

Minister in the UP government, Siddharth Nath Singh said that the UP cabinet has brought the Uttar Pradesh Law Prohibition of Religion Ordinance 2020, which is necessary to keep law and order in Uttar Pradesh normal and provide justice to women. He said that in the past more than 100 incidents had come to the fore in which forced conversions were done. Inside it, fraud is being converted, religion is being converted by force.

If the ordinance is desired for conversion, the district magistrate will have to inform the district magistrate 2 months in advance on the prescribed format, for its violation there is a provision for punishment of 6 months to 3 years and fine, fine not less than 10 thousand rupees needed

According to the Ordinance, for conversion from one religion to another, a declaration has to be made before the prescribed authority that the conversion is by false fabrication, coercion, untimely effect, persecution, coercion or any other fraudulent manner or by dispute with one religion. Not for another conversion.
