After enduring four consecutive defeats, five-time champions Mumbai Indians have finally tasted victory in IPL 2026. Following a win in their opening match of the season, Mumbai had been struggling, but they bounced back in style by defeating Gujarat Titans by a massive margin of 99 runs in a one-sided encounter. The victory was built on Tilak Varma's maiden IPL century, which propelled Mumbai to a formidable total of 199, followed by a clinical bowling performance that bundled out Gujarat for just 100 runs.
Tilak Varma's Masterclass Rescues Mumbai Indians
The 30th match of IPL 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad began on a challenging note for Mumbai Indians. Gujarat Titans' pacer Kagiso Rabada wreaked havoc in the powerplay, using his pace to dismantle MI's top order. Rabada finished with figures of 3/33, leaving Mumbai reeling at 44/3 at one stage. However, Naman Dhir played a crucial knock of 45 runs to stabilize the innings and take the team close to the 100-run mark.
The rest of the innings belonged entirely to Tilak Varma, while having scored only 43 runs in his previous five outings, Tilak chose the perfect moment to find his form. He smashed a brilliant century off just 45 deliveries. At one point, he was batting on 19 runs from 22 balls, but he shifted gears dramatically to take down the GT bowling attack. While Hardik Pandya struggled at the other end, scoring 15 off 16 balls, Tilak remained unstoppable. He completed his century (101 runs, 45 balls, 7 sixes, 8 fours) with a boundary on the final ball of the innings.
Bumrah Breaks Wicketless Streak as Ashwani Kumar Shines
Defending 199, Mumbai Indians needed a strong start with the ball, and Jasprit Bumrah delivered immediately. Bumrah, who had gone 146 balls without a wicket since the previous IPL season, struck on the very first ball of the innings by dismissing Sai Sudharsan. Hardik Pandya added to Gujarat's woes in the next over by taking the wicket of Jos Buttler.
The star of the bowling department, however, was Impact Player Ashwani Kumar. Playing his first match of IPL 2026, the left-arm pacer dismantled the Gujarat middle order, finishing with exceptional figures of 4/24.
