Israel-Hamas News / Hamas Makes U-turn on Gaza Ceasefire Deal, Refuses to Sign Peace Proposal

In a last-minute reversal, Hamas has refused to sign the Gaza ceasefire peace proposal brokered in Egypt. The militant group claims several clauses, particularly regarding disarmament and withdrawal from Gaza, are against its interests. This U-turn poses a significant setback to US President Trump's peace efforts.

Hamas has executed a major U-turn at the eleventh hour of the Gaza ceasefire negotiations, declaring it won't participate in the signing of the peace proposal brokered in Egypt. This refusal casts a shadow over the prospects for a lasting peace in the war-torn region. Hamas stated that several points within the proposed agreement are detrimental to its position and require further deliberation.

Key Objections to the Proposal

According to a report by Al Arabiya, citing Hamas spokesperson Husam Badran, the peace deal, which was finalized in Egypt, would be signed by US President Donald Trump and mediators from Qatar and Egypt. However, no Hamas representative will be present at the ceremony. Trump's 20-point peace plan reportedly includes provisions for the disarmament of Hamas and the governance of Palestine. The agreement stipulates that Hamas fighters must leave Gaza once the deal's term expires, after which the US and Egypt would jointly establish a new governing structure.

Hamas's Demands and Discontent

Hamas's primary objections stem from these two conditions. The group insists on being allowed to remain in Gaza through non-violent means. And demands a guaranteed role in any future government established in the territory. Hamas had reportedly sought Qatar's mediation on these points, but without success, while the group views itself as a legitimate political entity that shouldn't be disarmed or sidelined. Hamas maintains full control over Gaza, and Israel's conflict is predominantly with the militant group. Despite having been weakened, Hamas still commands an estimated 15,000 fighters. Should Hamas not sign the deal, it wouldn't be legally bound by its terms. This could potentially lead to a continuation of the conflict in Gaza and Palestine, presenting a significant setback for US President Trump. Prior to his visit to Israel, Trump had expressed confidence in achieving a complete cessation of hostilities in Gaza.
