Kerala / Heavy rain likely in next 48 hours, NDRF teams deployed, Orange alert issued for 12 districts

Thiruvananthapuram: Due to heavy rain in Kerala, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued Orange Alert for the whole day in 12 districts on Thursday. The IMD on Thursday issued an orange alert for all the remaining districts of Kerala except Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam.

The India Meteorological Department said on Thursday that an orange alert has been issued for 12 districts of Kerala including Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Alappuzha and will be here for the next 48. There is a possibility of heavy rain in the hour.

How do these alerts indicate?

Let us tell you that Orange Alert is issued for the area where there is a possibility of very heavy rain. According to the Orange Alert, there may be 6 to 20 cm of rain in the area. On the other hand, a red alert is issued for the possibility of more than 20 cm of rain, while the yellow alert indicates the possibility of less than 11 cm of rain.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) said that due to the cyclonic circulation over northern Tamil Nadu and adjoining areas, there will be heavy rains in many parts of this southern state. Earlier on Wednesday, the Central Meteorological Department had predicted heavy and very heavy rains in the state for the next two days and thereafter for the next two days.

It is worth noting that Kerala has been receiving torrential rains for the last few days. Due to this normal life has come to a standstill in some parts of the state. Traffic has also been badly affected at many places due to heavy rains.


CM Pinarayi Vijayan issued instructions

A day earlier, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan issued instructions regarding preparedness to ensure that the authorities are prepared to deal with problems like landslides and floods, in view of the early onset of monsoon in the state in view of torrential rains. .

Some of the instructions issued by the Chief Minister were- Local corporations should prepare a list of disaster prone areas in their area and make it available to the concerned authorities like police and fire services.

NDRF deployed 5 teams

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has already deployed five of its teams in Kerala. The SDMA has asked people to stay away from rivers and other water bodies till the rains subside. The SDMA has asked people not to travel to hilly areas unless there is an emergency. Along with this, it has also been advised to avoid night travel till the rain subsides.

The district administration has also warned people not to go near the coastal areas. The IMD had earlier predicted that the Southwest Monsoon could knock in the state by May 27. This time the monsoon is expected to arrive five days before the normal date.
